Our short Wicket talk at Web frameworks shootout, 33rdDegree conference

Tags: , ,

If you, by any chance, are one of the 33rdDegree conference participants and you are interested in developing web applications using Java/JVM environment you should also be interested in one of the BOF sessions on Wednesday during the conference: Web frameworks shootout.

We (Paul Szulc with me as a support) will be presenting Wicket framework and its nice features which help Java Developers to build web applications easily and with a lot of fun! :) At this BOF session you will have an opportunity to see more short and concise presentations of the following new and cool web frameworks: Play, Lift, and Grails,  so a lot of new knowledge are waiting there for you :)

Of course if you want to talk with me about Wicket or anything else, don’t hesitate and catch me anytime during 33rdDegree.

Crowded conferences 2011 calendar in Poland and Wicket author talk at 33rdDegree

Tags: , , ,

This year seems to be really great for those Java Developers here in Poland who want to learn and listen about new technologies, methodologies, etc. at conference meetings. When I examined conferences calendar I found it very packed with many interesting events. And only one thing is troublesome where you are, like me, freelancing: you have to take a day or two off (so you don’t work and earn money) and moreover, you have to pay for conference with your own cash :) Such situation forces me to analyse and think carefully about which conference to attend and which I should skip.

In the first half of this year there are three big conferences to choose from: 4Developers 2011 in Warsaw,  33rdDegree and GeeCON 2011 both in Cracow. 4Developers isn’t aimed only too Java people so I decided to skip it this year. GeeCON looks very promising but when I recently got information that one of the Wicket authors: Martijn Dashorst will be speaking at 33rdDegree I know that this will be my choice! :)

So if you want to:

  • hear about Wicket, about what are the new features in hot new 1.5 version from person as close as is it possible to Wicket developers team
  • attend Android/Scala/Git workshops for free
  • meet one of the most well-known Polish speakers: Jacek Laskowski (when I think “Java Polish blogger” he’s the one to come first to my mind), Sławomir Sobótka (craftsmanship is probably his unrevealed and top secret second name), Szczepan Faber (bartender at Mockito), Paweł Lipiński (great TDD presentation show-man)
  • hear and even talk with Ted Neward, Linda Rising, Sang Shin (who don’t know these names, shame on you! :) )
  • see when Martijn Dashorst (Wicket talk) /Nicolas Leroux (Play talk) / Dierk König (Grails talk) attacks and argue with Matt Raible after his talk Comparing JVM Web Frameworks when Matt will declare that none of Wicket/Play/Grails are best of best web framework? ;)

If you want to be a part of some of these things above, let’s meet at 33rdDegree conference. Coming soon in April 2011 :)

Slides from JDD 2010 available

Tags: , , ,

I have good news for those who didn’t attend a JDD conference this year or simply weren’t attentive enough. You can download slides from almost all talks from here. If you are interested in slides from “Technical Debt” which are not yet available on JDD website you can download them from here as I received straight from the author :)

JDD 2010 from my perspective

Tags: , , ,

A few days ago I attended a  Java Developers’ Day 2010 conference in Cracow. If someone ask me to sum this event I would tell: not bad but definitely not very good. I think that popularity of Java conferences in Poland made people who are responsible for organizing JDD think that whether they do it very well or they just screw some things up it won’t affect number of developers who are willing to pay for tickets. This is short summary of JDD’10. If you are interested in more complains and a few praises please continue reading this post :)

What definitely was NOT good

1. Agenda was not fully ready until the conference start was really, really close.
2. Start time changed ONE day before conference. Ok, maybe it’s not organizers fault, but at the end who cares. It had changed and forced me to take luggage with me instead of leaving it where I planned to sleep.
3. If I rent one half of sports hall for my wedding I really, really WOULD check that there is no basketball match or training planned at the same time in the second half of the hall.
4. Scala workshop was definitely good, but room was cold and not only me complained about it. There is nothing nice in sitting for over three hours in such environment.
5. We all have to thank sponsors for their support and money they gave to the organizers. But I think it shouldn’t be too hard to prepare presentation which won’t be so, so, so much marketing-like and as a result really boring. That’s why only at sponsors lectures I saw many people surfing on the Internet, reading e-mails and even simply staying at the coffee hall to chat and do something more interesting.
6. Almost blinding Thomas Sundberg with reflectors at the end of his talk that he wasn’t able to see people asking questions was embarrassing for me and so it should be for organizers. Continue reading this post …

Konferencja z koziołkami w tle, czyli 4Developers w Poznaniu

Tags: , ,

Dear Reader
This post is in my native language as it applies only to developers society in Poland. Please feel free to check my other posts which are mainly written in English.

Continue reading this post …
